Various events and activities are held during this occasion to raise awareness that suicide is a major preventable cause of premature death.
WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY is an opportunity for all sectors of the community - the public, charitable organisations, communities, those bereaved by suicide, and other interested groups and individuals - to join with PIPS Newry & Mourne to focus public attention on the unacceptable burden and costs of suicidal behaviours with diverse activities to promote understanding about suicide and highlight effective prevention activities.
Each year PIPS Newry & Mourne organise a balloon release to remember our loved ones loss to suicide and also those in our community that have died by suicide.
This year PIPS Newry & Mourne have again organised A Lunch time Suicide Awareness Balloon Release to remember our loved ones loss to suicide, the balloon release will take place outside the Newry Town Hall, In addition to this event there are a number of suicide awareness training and education workshops planned for the month of September. (see Training section) In partnership with the Rural Health Partnership, Cullyhanna and the Public Health Agency.
PIPS Newry & Mourne provides support for bereaved families, tackles the stigma of suicide which still exists, and have created safe and empathetic environments where those at risk can find help.
Seamus McCabe the Protect Life Community Development worker said. "The message that survivors are not alone in their grief is imperative."
Suicide is public health concern and therefore it is everybody's concern and responsibility
This day has become an annual community event held to honour and remember those who have died by suicide and, importantly those who live beyond suicide - the survivors.
This day is attended by survivors, community representatives, and political representatives
The day serves to remind the community of the impact of suicide and to encourage support for suicide prevention and postvention as a preventive measure.
Together, we are stating our commitment to raise awareness on the issue and urging the Government to continue tackling our frightening rates of suicide
