Suicide Prevention OCN Accreditation

Congratulations to 3 Ways Community Centre, High Street, Newry who became the first learners to successfully complete OCN Certification of learning through our P.I.P.S. Community Lifeguard Suicide Prevention Training
The unit which PIPS Newry & Mourne (Public Initiative for the Prevention of Suicide and Self-harm) offers in partnership with PIPS Training is titled, PIPS Community Lifeguard Training and we are especially pleased to offer this accredited course as we believe this to be the first accredited suicide prevention course in the U.K..
We congratulate the 3 ways community Centre as they where the first group to complete this training in the Newry & Mourne area, since then we have delivered in other parts of South Armagh and South Down and the feedback has always been very positive
The training is aimed at ordinary members of the community with local people trained to be more aware of the risk of suicide and the sources of help available, the training helps make our communities safer. Each training programme is tailored to make it as relevant as possible to participants. This means that statistics, helpline numbers and sources of local support will always be relevant to the area where training takes place and the particular issues affecting that community.
In order to achieve OCN certification, learners are asked to attend a 5 hour workshop and complete a short pre-course exercise, and discussion whilst attending the one-day course, The certificate is worth One Credit at Level Two
Graduates from the course recently received their OCN Certificates for Suicide Prevention in the 3 Ways Community Centre on Monday 23rd November
Funding to provide the course was successfully sourced through ESB Electric Aid, Ireland
The course is open to any group over the age of 16 and those participating will learn valuable skills that may help save someone’s life

FOR THOSE BEREAVED THROUGH SUICIDE OR OTHER SUDDEN DEATH
The loss of someone you have been close to from any cause brings about intense grief and mourning. But the responses and emotions experienced by the bereaved following a suicide can differ from those felt after other types of death. The fact that a loved one's death appeared to involve an element of choice raises painful questions which deaths from natural or accident causes do not. Bereavement by suicide is prolonged. Research suggests that the shock, social isolation and guilt are often greater than for other causes of death. The grieving process is characterised by agonising questioning and a search for some expanation for what has happened. Some people bereaved in this way feel a strong sense of abandonment and rejection. Whilst some of the special aspects of bereavement by suicide are described below, not all will be relevant to your own experience of grief.
