World Suicide Prevention Day - Wednesday 10th September 2008

Event 1 - Bereaved through Suicide Seminar, Canal Cout Hotel, Newry from 9.30am - 4.00pm

The seminar is for those who have been bereaved through suicide and anyone interested should contact the PIPS N&M office on 02830266195 or email info@pipsnewryandmourne.org to book a place as there are limited places available

Guest Speaker : Christy Keneally is a well-known Irish TV presenter, scriptwriter and author.

Christy presented RTE's 'No Frontiers' series Author of "Life After Loss" Helping the Bereaved which has also featured on Ireland's Bestseller list. A very perceptive speaker, he engages easily with his audience and is highly entertaining while at the same time delivering the keynote messages eloquently and with impact. He scripted and presented a series for television on the great religions of the world, as experienced through their art and architecture, entitled Heaven on Earth. Christy is a graduate from the National University of Ireland with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Bachelor of Divinity.

Event 2 - Balloon Release at Newry City Hall, 1pm on Wednesday 10th September 2008

We will be releasing 17 Balloons to represent the recorded number of deaths by suicide in the Newry & Mourne area the balloons will be relaesed at 1pm on Sept 10th outside the Newry City Hall it is hoped that anyone who has been affected by suicide and is able to will attend.

Event 3 - Kingdom Fun Day - Kilkeel


In the Kingdom Youth Club, Kilkeel, on 13th Sept starting at 11am there will be a 'Fun Day' which will include numerous activities including ' Its a knock out' Bouncy castle, face painting and many more. This event is being organised by the PIPS Newry & Mourne Satellite group in the Kitty's Rd area and is to help promote good mental health issues within the area.

FOR THOSE BEREAVED THROUGH SUICIDE OR OTHER SUDDEN DEATH

The loss of someone you have been close to from any cause brings about intense grief and mourning. But the responses and emotions experienced by the bereaved following a suicide can differ from those felt after other types of death. The fact that a loved one's death appeared to involve an element of choice raises painful questions which deaths from natural or accident causes do not. Bereavement by suicide is prolonged. Research suggests that the shock, social isolation and guilt are often greater than for other causes of death. The grieving process is characterised by agonising questioning and a search for some expanation for what has happened. Some people bereaved in this way feel a strong sense of abandonment and rejection. Whilst some of the special aspects of bereavement by suicide are described below, not all will be relevant to your own experience of grief.
